The Toronto Star reports on March 9 2011:
According to U-Haul International we are a city again and...
Etobicoke is one of Canada’s 25 most popular cities to move to.
That’s right, “cities.” The west-end suburb that became part of Toronto during amalgamation in 1998 is in the No. 22 spot on U-Haul’s annual list of “Top 25 Canadian Destination Cities.”
Toronto, meanwhile, ranked first for the ninth consecutive year in the truck rental company’s report on move-it-yourselfers that lists the arrival cities of people moving more than 80 kilometres.
“It’s its own separate city, right?” spokeswoman Joanne Fried said in a phone interview from Phoenix, Ariz., where U-Haul International Inc. is based. “It’s like Scarborough or North York or Mississaw-gwa, isn’t it?” Mississauga was 10th.
While Fried couldn’t explain Etobicoke’s popularity — “we don’t ask customers why they’re moving” — she didn’t discount the Rob Ford effect. Toronto’s mayor lives in Etobicoke.
U-Haul’s customer base among its 1,500 locations is “very diverse,” with everyone from students to senior citizens opting to move themselves rather than hire professionals, said Fried.
